the north. the timing will be crucial. if it holds the that track, we will be ok. you can see the western side of that, still does include ocean city. the potential is there for a storm on the maryland coast this weekend. the great lakes are sliding in this direction. we will check all that. >> baltimore police said they have arrested a suspect connected to a least 17 robberies. they conducted surveillance on the 3300 block and spotted the suspect. on taking him into custody, they say he took a deep breath and said, it's over. mostly in the charles village and the south pointe areas between august 3 and august 24 of this year. city police are also investigating a shooting in northeast baltimore. the sky team flew over the

avenue at around 12:30 this afternoon where a man was found shot in an alley. he was taken to the hospital, no word on his condition at this hour. >> state budget cuts happen in maryland. yesterday, the governor laid out a plan to cut millions of dollars of spending, and there was no smiling going on. we are joined with more on this story. >> there were no smiles out here again today. the cuts are wide and deep, and certainly are affecting local government. >> we have cut state spending by more than $4.30 billion over the last 2.5 years. >> the cuts unanimously approved, at a time when budgets are already strained a locally. when deep cuts have already been made it many times before. >> there is nothing easy about this.

degrees. it 90 in downtown baltimore. if you care whether clouds as the night wears on -- a few fairweather clouds. it might also bring an isolated thunderstorm. high pressure to the south is holding the front off. it will be sliding south and east. there are some scattered thunderstorms along the great lakes pushing up into upstate new york. as the front schleys south tonight, there is a possibility of an isolated thunderstorms developing. it will turn the winds to the north. with that front lingering, the possibility of a thunderstorm returns to the forecast. not a lot of thunderstorms in the forecast, but the front extends offshore were a few storms will develop. maybe a 20% chance of an isolated storm tomorrow. friday, we have to watch the

front sliding to our south. this batch of rain is associated with tropical storm danny which may become a hurricane as it makes its way up the mid- atlantic coast. fred and i, some of the outer bands will push showers along the coastal section with heavy rain pushing up towards long island in new york. it might be close enough to kind of enhanced our shower and thunderstorm chances, especially at the beach. it drops the temperature tomorrow a little bit, isolated thunderstorms 20 percent chance. those winds shift to the north tomorrow once the front goes by. here's a close-up view. the hurricane center flight that went out, the hurricane hunter plane -- as agency, is fairly disorganized. there is not a well-defined eye.

investigation of the capsizing of the boat. a number of factors caused the incident that resulted in the death of five passengers. >> they sailed into an approaching squall line which was extreme. the winds were stream lehigh. the vessel had about 70% of the energy needed for the weight of passengers aboard that day. >> it ran into a squall line with winds gusting over 50 miles an hour. shortly before it capsized, a deck hand at all the passengers moved to one side of the craft. a combination of wind, high seas, and the instability caused it to flip over. the kennedy made it difficult for passengers to escape. >> once the entire boat had flipped upside down, it was a totally enclosed pontoon boat that was full of water. we had to find our way out.

>> there is a new way to spot vision problems are very early in children using a technology that will probably be one of their favorites. television. >> 5-year-old bryan is having his vision tested. the traditional way as part of his annual checkup. and he is undergoing a new screening test. it is designed to study a child's vision as early as 9 months old with minimal effort on their part. >> is a new technology they use his brain wave analysis that allows us to be able to get this information at a much younger age. >> electrodes are placed on a child's head. lights go off, and cartoons appear. it is not your typical cartoon. images of lines are constantly interrupted. the test analyzes how the eyes and brain perceives those lines.

a passing grade is given of the test does not detect any difference between the two eyes. it could be an early indicator of something called lazy eye which could cause blindness if left untreated. they use this practice in north carolina. >> these kids are able to be treated at an earlier age that we would have been able to do in the past. they can potentially avoid surgery and permanent loss of vision. >> it only takes 10 minutes. if they fail the test, they are sent ophthalmologist. -- and they are sent to an ophthalmologist. they take the squirm out of traditional eye exams. they're not dismissing the eye chart yet. >> we look at the alignment of the eyes, or whether there is something blocking light from coming into the eyes like a scar on the cornea or cataract.

mid atlantic coast. the storm is forecast well offshore with bands of rain produced around long island saturday morning with scattered showers as it crossed the mid- atlantic coast. -- scattered showers across the mid-atlantic coast. it kind of steals all the moisture, and if you get far enough west, we may end up with a dry pattern as the hurricanes deals all the moisture. it will probably have some impact -- as the hurricanes deals all the moisture. -- hurrican steals all of the moisture. partly cloudy skies and 79 in western maryland tomorrow with a slight chance for an isolated showers. the same kind of scenario as we head down to the coast. another hot one in ocean city.

there is a satellite -- a satellite view of danny. the hurricane center thinks it may get a little stronger and more organized as it moves towards the coast and turns northeast. the winds are only 45 miles an hour and are several days away from having a major impact on the outer banks of north carolina or new england. at 6:00, we will take a look at the exact track of danny. 79 with some scattered showers around on friday. the storm passes well off the coast over the weekend, but we will see scattered thunderstorms here with weekend highs in the low 80's. a little more like fall as we go into the early part of september. >> into nine's consumer look, the safety commission says some shades and blind to pose an immediate threat to small children. nbc's tom costello has more.
